Dr Catherine Houlihan

Dr Catherine Houlihan is a clinical virology consultant at UCLH. She holds an honorary position at UCL in the department of infection and immunity.
Catherine’s research has been on epidemiology of viral infections in East and West Africa including HPV and Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs). She has led several studies in health care workers including serological investigation of VHFs in health care workers in Uganda, of humanitarian workers who returned to the UK after working during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa (both UK PHRST funded), and a study of transmission of influenza between patients and staff at UCLH (BIA funded).
Catherine was funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences to run a study using metagenomics to diagnose undiagnosed central nervous system infection in patients in Uganda. She is currently the site PI for three studies at UCLH; a double-blind randomised controlled study of monoclonal antibody to prevent infection with COVID-19, a study investigating the use of medical detection dogs to diagnose COVID-19, and the site PI for SAFER Plus. She is also a co-investigator on several SARS-CoV-2 vaccine studies at UCLH.
