Eleni Nastouli leads SAFER and is a Consultant Virologist at UCLH; her academic affiliation is with the UCL Institute of Child Health and the Francis Crick Institute.
Her research is translational, aiming at understanding how best to use virus molecular and genomic data to improve diagnosis, treatment, exposures and benefit patients. She receives funding from the MRC, H2020 and the NIHR as well as GSK and has extensive collaborations in Africa, Latin America and Russia. She leads the UCLH APDU, bringing cutting edge, novel diagnostics to clinical practice for which she was awarded the Health Innovation Award. In the COVID-19 pandemic, she co-leads the COVID-Crick-Consortium expanding capacity for diagnostics in North Central London and was awarded two critical grants for National policy in Healthcare Worker research (SAFER) and community transmission (Virus Watch, as a co-investigator).
She contributes to national and international policy groups (PHE, PENTA and WHO) and is UCLH PI for COVID-19 studies (COG-UK, SIREN and vaccine clinical trials).
